News reports and certain statistics want us to believe that crime and violence has gone down. But if you look around you’ll see a different reality. While the official data may show a lower number, it is important to understand the reasons for that. One reason is the change in criteria that determines what is considered a crime and what will be included in the statistic.
Another reason, and this may be even more important than the first, is that less crime is being reported. Victims of lesser crimes stopped reporting them because they know that the only thing that comes from reporting it is the necessary paperwork. After that, the paperwork will be filed and… the end. A reason for that is the prioritizing of crimes. Lesser crimes are at the lower end of the priority list, naturally. This is the nature of the biest and a higher number of law enforcement will now make any changes.
